The Positive Culture Framework looks at how attitudes, perceptions and beliefs shape community norms. In Ashland, we have strong community norms around youth health & safety and that as a community we should work together to prevent and reduce youth substance use. There is a community commitment to support the behavioral health (mental health & substance use) of all Ashland youth. There are programs and services that address all levels of prevention and all levels of behavioral health, across all of the social ecologies.

Consequences for furnishing alcohol to youth under age 21.

Tobacco Regulations

Regulation of the Ashland Board of Health restricting the sale of tobacco and nicotine products and delivery systems, including the prohibiting of tobacco sales to persons under the minimum legal sales age in Ashland of 21.

Alcohol Regulations

Regulation of the Ashland Select Board for the goal of responsible alcohol service and consumption, including the prohibiting of purchase by a person under age 21 or sale/delivery to a person under age 21.

Screening Brief Intervention Referral to treatment (SBIRT)

Prevention and intervention program delivered by nursing staff to 7th and 9th graders to provide substance use prevention information and identify students who may be at risk for substance use.

National Citizens Survey

Community-wide survey administered every 3 years in Ashland to assess various life, service, and support metrics. Data from the 2019 survey revealed that 75% of respondents strongly agreed and 19% somewhat agreed that “as a community, we should try to prevent youth substance use.”

Sticker Shock

Collaboration with the AHS SADD chapter and local alcohol retailers to raise awareness about the consequences of providing alcohol to underage youth through informational stickers that are placed on beer/alcohol packaging.

Drug Take Back Day

Partnership with the Ashland Police Department and Ashland Lions to encourage the disposal of unwanted, unused, or expired medications. Drop-off events are held at the police stations in April and October.

PBIS Pre K-12

A multi-tier level of support that aligns academic, behavioral, social, and emotional supports to improve education for all students.
